Starter for 10 (2007)

Updated: Aug 3, 2020

Starter for 10 is a really cute movie about a guy navigating relationships and trivia competitions as he enters University. I promise, it’s more interesting than I made it sound. I think this movie has a charm to it that most college films don’t, and that is what makes it so enjoyable. It really is about how you deal with events after the fact and what that says about you, it understands humanity and its complexity, which also sounds a little more high-brow than this movie really is. At any rate, this really is a cute film. I can not move on from this without mentioning Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance as Patrick. He made this movie for me. With a different actor, or even a different understanding of the character, Patrick could have completely come off as a pure dick. However, the way Cumberbatch portrays him makes him, to me, the funniest character. He has all the right nuances to show his personality traits whilst also showing the audience how he tries to overcome his flaws and move forward as a person. This is really not a movie about Patrick, but he is just so funny by situation and helps contrast all the different personalities that the protagonist, Brian, encounters. Overall, definitely worth a watch because of the different perspective it offers on a college film.
