Mulholland Drive (2001)

Now, before I begin this, I want to say that I have seen worse movies, however, there is no movie that I hate more. I know this movie is pretty divisive in general, but the people who say they understood this have to be lying to themselves. Granted, I have actually heard reasonable explanations about this movie and what happened, and they even made sense at the time, but in the moment, or rather all 2 hours and 27 minutes that house this film’s runtime, I was purely confused. It felt like it was leading up to something that would explain all the random asides with the characters they kept introducing, but after watching over two hours of unconnected nonsense, it just backpedaled everything you had just seen making all that time spent viewing this completely worthless. I spent the next several days trying to grasp for anything that made even some kind of sense, but I was left incredibly unsatisfied. I knew I was in for a weird film when the opening was just 10 minutes of a kidnapped person in the back seat of the car, but there was not one single moment of alleviation afterwards. My friend and I even have a joke now about how incredibly unobservant everyone in one sequence had to be not to notice an adult female run into their house and “hide” under a very open table against a wall (this makes sense if you’ve seen it). Overall, if you understood or enjoyed this movie, all the power to you, but if I never see it again, it will be too soon.
