Superman Returns (2006)

First off, before I get into this, I want to say that I thought Brandon Routh did great bringing both Clark Kent and Superman to life. Unfortunately, the story he had to work with completely undermined him. I honestly couldn’t tell you what exactly it was that Lex Luthor was trying to accomplish. Not because it was convoluted, well, maybe it was, but I was too bored to notice either way. And then there was the problem of James Marsden. He wasn’t a problem, in fact, he was probably my favorite character in the whole movie, it was just that he was given the role of Lois Lane’s fiancé. As an audience, obviously we are supposed to want Superman and Lois Lane to end up together, but this guy was too nice for me to root against. And then they threw in a child, which I feel was completely unnecessary in the script. It just added to the list of reasons that Lois Lane shouldn’t leave this guy, but the script made it seem as if that was the only reason she wanted to stay with him once Superman returned to Metropolis. Even when he sees that Lois’s affections are somewhere else, he doesn’t become the stereotypical jealous boyfriend, he ends up helping both her and Superman for the greater good without hesitation. There really wasn’t enough going on in this movie to make it feel like the fun Superman movie it was trying to be, but it still managed to be over two and a half hours. This was the first Superman movie I purchased, but I am glad that it wasn’t the first one I watched because I don’t know if I ever would have bothered watching another one. That came off a bit harsh, but really, this movie’s biggest enemy is the lack of attention it demands from its audience.
